Legal Research Institute publishes the first issue of Small and Mid-sized Companies and LawsLegal Research Institute of Law School published the first issue of Small and Mid-sized Companies and Laws, an academic journal. <span lang=EN-US style=\'font-family:굴림; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi; mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-language:KO;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA\'>Small and Mid-sized Companies and Laws<span lang=EN-US style=\'font-family:굴림; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi;mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-language:KO;mso-bidi-language: AR-SA\'> was launched to provide useful legal information to small and mid-sized companies, also aiming to be added to the National Research Foundation of Korea\\'s list of academic journals. The first issue featured articles on financial conditions and risk faced by small businesses and the problem of corporate ownership. In particular, works presented by Professors Horst Hammen and Jens Mueller of Justus-Liebig University in Germany on corporate-owned shares were introduced in detail. Yoon, Sunah (second semester in Law School), the editor of the feature story of corporate-owned shares, said, <span style=\'font-family:굴림; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-language: KO;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA\'>“They introduce Germany\\'s regulations on the extent of corporate-owned shares, the public announcement system required when acquiring shares and administrative measures that control the acquisition of shares to ensure fair competition and public security and safeguard the financial sectors and institutions.<span style=\'font-family:굴림; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-language: KO;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA\'>” <span lang=EN-US style=\'font-family:굴림; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi; mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-language:KO;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA\'>The Law School students are serving as the editors of this journal as in the case of Harvard Law Review published by Harvard Law School. Yoon said, <span style=\'font-family:굴림; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-language: KO;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA\'>“It was not easy to look for contributors, edit articles and handle the overall process of the publication while attending classes, but it was a highly rewarding job. We will continue to strive to become recognized as a practical academic journal and added to the list of academic journals by the National Research Foundation of Korea." Ajou Vision 2023 Declared - Realizing University Visions of Human Respect, Global Village, Practical Learning Ajou University, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2023, declared the “Ajou Vision 2023” on November 6 and took its first step toward joining the world’s top 100 universities. Having practiced its visions, “Human respect,” “Global village,” and “Practical learning” for the last 35 years to earn its place among Korea’s top universities, Ajou University is now taking a leap forward to become a prestigious university of the world. With the motto a "World-class University that leads convergent areas” for its “Ajou Vision 2023” in tune with “practical learning,” Ajou University plans to put its short- and long-range master plans into action in three steps, each 5 years in length, over a total of 15 years. It aims to join the list of Korea’s top 10 universities by 2013, the ranks of Korea’s top 5 private universities by 2018, and earn a place among the world’s top 100 universities by 2023. The vision declaration ceremony was held along with a variety of additional events including a blood donation campaign and “International Day,” among others. Ajou University plans to donate the blood certificates raised during the “Vision 2023 Blood Donation Campaign” to foreign laborers working for small and medium companies in Gyeonggi province. As part of its vision, “Human Respect,” the event was held with the President of Ajou University Moon Ho SUH, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and others in attendance. Also, the 13th “Ajou International Day 2008” featured a variety of traditional clothing and food prepared by foreign exchange students and foreign students who came from some 40 countries around the world to study at Ajou University. Several foreign ambassadors to Korea including the ambassadors of Sudan, Pakistan, and Dominican Republic participated in the event. Kim Min-Koo, the Vice President for Planning, mentioned that Ajou University has laid out its detailed action plan to becoming a world-class university in all areas including education, research, and administration, adding that the university is putting the plan into action systematically. As part of efforts to carry out the plan, Ajou University is working on the 1010 project, which aims to cultivate 10 outstanding research groups and 10 outstanding education groups. The university is particularly committed to the cultivation of the top-notch research group in convergent disciplines. Currently, Ajou University works in partnership with 152 universities in 43 countries for various exchange programs. Some 1,000 students from 51 countries visit Ajou University every year. Currently, 235 degree-program students from 33 countries, 115 exchange students from 18 countries, and 160 students in the language program from 16 countries are studying at Ajou University. Several experts at home and abroad including Mark Pullen, the head of C4I Center at George Mason University, Adang, dean of Institute Technology Bandung in Indonesia, Kim Yun-Su of the Agency for Defense Development in Korea, and Kim Gwon-Hui of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration in Korea, presented papers at the seminar. The C4I master’s program was established in 1998 in accordance with the “MOU for C4I Education” signed by Ajou University’s Graduate School of Information and Communication Technology and the Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff. Since then, the program has produced some 440 military IT professionals, including generals.Kim Dong-Yoon, dean of the Graduate School of Information and Communication Technology, said that the seminar motivated the building of the practical military-academic cooperation system and strengthening of the international network, adding that it will be the foundation for the development of military IT areas in the future. The Graduate School of Information and Communication Technology was founded in 1998 with the aim of retraining workers in information and communication areas. The school has introduced a variety of new programs including the 4-semester program, taught masters course, on-line education, and the like for the last 10 years, establishing itself firmly as an institution for retraining of the IT workforce. Ajou University President Moon Ho SUH Signs Academic Exchange Agreement with Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas - “Education and research exchange in the energy sector between the two universities expected” - Dr. SUH as the Only University President among President Lee’s entourage on his Visit to Russia Dr. Moon Ho SUH, the president of Ajou University, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas for an “education and research exchange in the energy sector” on September 30 in the World Trade Center in Moscow, Russia in the presence of the Minister of Knowledge Economy Lee Youn-Ho. The two universities agreed to exchange education and research on the energy sector in general including efficient use of oil, gas, and other energy resources, climate change, and other environmental issues. Dr. SUH said that this agreement would be the starting point of exchange and cooperation in the energy sector between Korea and Russia. This agreement was made during Korean President Lee Myung-Bak’s visit to Russia and Dr. SUH was the only university head to be included in the Presidential entourage for academic cooperation and exchange between universities in the two countries. Ajou University established a degree program (both master’s and Ph.D.’s) in energy and climate change and established the university-affiliated energy institute in 1986 for the first time in Korea in order to cultivate professionals in energy and climate change-related areas. Since 2003, it has been providing training for energy-related public and private sectors and has been conducting research in accordance with the governmental (Ministry of Knowledge Energy formerly known as Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Energy) plan for the cultivation of experts in energy. Matters to be done by colleges interested in their internationalization - Presentation made at APAIE by the team led by Professor Do-yeong Kim What do Korean students studying in Europe need more than anything else? It appears that the answer to this question is “a proactive mindset and open-mindedness.” For foreigner students studying in Korea, “knowledge about local cultures” appears what they need the most.The foregoing is part of the contents of the presentation made by a team led by Professor Kim Do-yeong (School of Business Administration) with the help of Chang Dae-sung (a graduate student/School of Business Administration) at a session of the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) held in March in Japan based on a survey toward 84 Ajou students studying in Europe, North America and Oceania and 99 foreign students studying at Ajou as part of the sister school student exchange program.The survey, which was carried out on three occasions, i.e. right after their arrival, two months later and four months later, checked the students’ level of assimilation to local cultures, human interactions, satisfaction with life in a foreign country plus desired roles of the home university and the host university in connection with the foregoing.Ajou students with a proactive mindset studying in foreign countries showed a positive result in terms of assimilation to local cultures. Commenting on the survey, Professor Kim Do-yeong and Mr. Chang Dae-sung said, “The survey shows how their individual personality has an impact on their need to adapt to cultures of foreign countries where individualism is respected.” In contrast, the survey shows that foreigner students studying at Ajou rarely see that their individual personality has a significant impact on their life in Korea, a collectivist society, and that they get assimilated to local cultures rapidly, as time goes by. The research team commented on it, saying, “It appears that as foreigner students here come to have a deeper understanding of local cultures, as they have more and more close Korean friends.” The research proposes that it is necessary for Korean students who intend to study in these foreign countries to pay attention to the fact that their own behavior toward others will have a strong impact on their life there amid strong individualism. As for foreigner students studying at Ajou, the research says that it is necessary for them to understand local cultures, particularly the strong collectivism of Koreans to have a higher level of satisfaction with their life here. The research also points to the need for colleges in the said foreign countries to provide programs designed to help Korean students there to be able to adapt to their individualistic cultures, and vice versa. The research says, “Overall, both Korean and foreigner exchange students express much higher satisfaction with their life in foreign countries than in the past. Needless to say, their level of satisfaction will become higher with the launch of the aforesaid programs.” Man-Ghyu Pak, Head of the Office of External Relations, said, “The research was carried out, as it was pointed out that it was necessary to overhaul the student exchange program. I agree that we should make efforts to enhance the quality of the program, rather than focusing on increasing the number of exchange students. NEIP Grabs First Prize at the World Student Technology Competition - NEIP\'s Short Film Won First Prize at the Imagine Cup 2008 - GOMZ Won Third Prize in the Game Sector Korea\'s NEIP team (digital media majors including Ahn Seong-Ran, Jeong Il-Jin, Chu Yeon-Jun, and Yi Seong-Wuk) and the GOMZ team (information and computer engineering major Kim Dong-Hun as a member ) won the first and the third prizes at the "Imagine Cup 2008. At the world student technology competition, the "Imagine Cup 2008," held in Paris, France, the Korean NEIP team won the first prize in short film by beating both the Mexican and Canadian teams. The GONZ team, which competed in the game development sector, was ranked third following the Brazilian and Belgian teams. While one of the Korean teams advanced to the final and won the second prize last year, four Korean teams competed in the finals in four sections and two of them won prizes this year. With "Imagine a world where technology enables a sustainable environment" as its topic, this year\'s competition selected winners by evaluating the uniqueness, innovativeness, potential for further development, and presentation of the project of each team. The team NEIP advanced to the final with "The Red Cloak," a short film about a boy anxiously waiting for a superman who will eliminate air pollution. As the finalists were supposed to shoot, edit, and finish a work on a new topic within 36 hours, the NEIP comically depicted the process of recycling cans and its significance in its work "Can" and won the first prize. According to the judges, the work was "eco-friendly and unique in its idea." The GOMZ team, which won the third prize in the game development section that was added this year for the first time, showed off its work, which features a touch of Korean elements. The film"Cleanup," is an action game in which humans, who left the polluted earth for outer space and purified the environment of a cube, which is as polluted as the earth using clean guns. Started on July 3 this year, the "Imagine Cup" is a student technology competition created by Microsoft in 2003. Opened to all 16 year-olds or older students around the world, the competition this year had some 208,000 students participating from 120 countries, among whom some 370 students from 61 countries competed in the finals.
